Short Term Scientific Missions (STSM)

Short-term scientific missions (STSM) are Inter-laboratory exchange visits between researchers involved in a COST Action, allowing scientists to visit an institution or laboratory in another COST country. They are aimed at fostering collaboration, sharing new techniques and infrastructure that may not be available in other participants' institutions or laboratories. STSMs are intended especially for young researchers.

COST vademecum, Section 7, available here:  provides all necessary information about eligibility, maximum grants, requirements. Please make sure that you read this information prior to submitting your application.

"Please also note the following rules for STSM applications:

1. No duplicate proposal,  no group STSM, an STSM is unique;
2. If two (or more) proposals are found to be nearly identical (including previous/approved applications, etc), the applicants are not allowed to submit any other applications during a one year period;
3. Applications should be submitted at least 45 days before the implementation is planned to start, to avoid high costs (flight, accommodation, etc);
4. No resubmission accepted during the same round, regardless of the reason for rejection (except for problems with documents/letters/admin issue); If rejected, a resubmission is allowed only during the next STSM grant period."

According to MC3 meeting decisions, STSM reports will be in the PUBLIC space of ELECTRONET website, except for the case that the person who wrote the report wants it confidential until the results are published.

ELECTRONET publishes calls for STSMs twice yearly, if a call is currently open it appears here.

If a call is open and you would like to apply, please follow this link to apply for a Short-term scientific mission (an e-COST profile is required and can be created if needed).

Apart from the online proposal, full proposals (CV, acceptance letter from the Host, the COST-generated application and Proposal-see model proposal below "STSM_proposal_template.docx") should be sent also via e-mail to the STSM coordinator Yoav Yair, at the e-mail address: [email protected] at least 4 weeks before the intended start of the mobility.

The proposal is prepared in connection to the host, however the proposal should be sent only by the applicant. Applications sent by the host will not be considered.

Please note that if a 2nd STSM is required by the same applicant, a justification letter is also required, which should describe why the 2nd STSM is needed, in close connection to ELECTRONET aims.

The document below "STSM userguide for website" provides all the information that you need in order to submit your application.

For any questions regarding STSM calls, you should contact the STSM Committee, except for questions related to administrative matters (e.g. reimbursement), for which you should contact the Grant Holder Manager/Administrator (see at this page for contact details).
